THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE PRODUCTS
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Herbalife is committed to setting the standard by which all nutrition companies are measured. The company is advancing the science of nutrition through scientific research conducted around the world. Since 2003 they increased the research and development expenditures dramatically to advance the product-development process.
Quality Assurance
Product integrity, safety and efficacy have always been Herbalife’s top priorities. Investing in new technology and research is a part of company commitment to providing innovative, science-based nutrition products. Ingredients used in the products are also found in many other foods. The materials (including botanical ingredients) are globally sourced from reputable suppliers and all products are manufactured in accordance with previously established quality standards. Product quality is verified inside a in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art testing equipment. The Herbalife quality team then conducts regular audits and inspections of suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure compliance.
Manufacturing
Herbalife complies with the applicable requirements of all regulatory bodies wherever we do business. In the United States, all products comply with and are labeled according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Outside of the United States, they comply with and are regulated by the various ministries of health and food standards agencies where the company does business. Through the acquisition of assets at Micelle Laboratories, a California contract manufacturer of food and dietary supplements, the company is able to enhance the global product development and supply chain to better support all the dedicated independent Distributors. It allows the company to increase the speed to market for new products while controlling quality along each step of the manufacturing process, from raw ingredients to finished products – part of the company ongoing commitment to excellence.
Clinical Studies
There are currently several clinical studies that are being conducted with major universities around the world in order to benchmark the efficacy of various products. Three clinical studies using our Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix were done: one at UCLA*, United States, one at the University of Ulm, Germany and one at Seoul National University Hospital in Korea. The studies conducted demonstrated that drinking Formula 1 shakes every day as meal replacements is an effective way to manage weight. A clinical study using Niteworks was also conducted at UCLA which concluded that the anaerobic threshold in men between the ages of 50 and 73 increased when drinking Niteworks every night.
* The University of California does not endorse specific products or services as a matter of policy.

HERBALIFE CELLULAR & MOLECULAR NUTRITION LAB
The Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular Nutrition Lab is located at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
UCLA is a prestigious university with a long history of top academics and distinguished researchers, founded back in 1919.
The donation to found Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular Nutrition Laboratory at UCLA is another example of Herbalife's commitment to science-based nutritional research. This laboratory is the foundation upon which Herbalife's wide range of products is built.
An independent center of excellence for analytical chemistry and testing, Mark Hughes Lab's mission is to advance the food sciences to new levels of understanding, using the most advanced technology available. These include the use of superior chemical profiling methods to identify complex families of active compounds in plants and to study their effect on living cells. Using the most sophisticated methods for detecting active components in plants and studying their effect on living cells, there is inevitably a positive difference in people's lives through the high impact of plant ingredients in weight control and optimal health.
The Mark Hughes lab is an extension of Herbalife's commitment to advancing the nutritional sciences to help people achieve optimal health and an improved quality of life. The Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular Nutrition Lab Foundation is just one of the many ways Herbalife shows commitment to exploring the importance of nutrition, to help humanity achieve optimal health and improve quality of life. This commitment begins with Mark Hughes, founder and founder of Herbalife, whose quest to improve human health through weight control and better nutrition has enabled him to obtain a team of medical and nutrition experts who create Herbalife formulas.
The lab first started using a method called "Multidimensional Profiling" (Multilayer Selection). While many laboratories use chemical methods for detecting plant products, the UCLA laboratory has replaced chemical research methods, with tests on the effects of plants on living cells. Going forward, Herbalife intends to take advantage of the research at UCLA, and commits to providing support and assistance to other prominent universities in plant research, using the unique "Multidimensional Profiling" method and technology.
Thanks to Mark Hughes dedication to scientific research, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) founded the Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular Nutrition Lab, located in Warren Hall's green. The lab is part of the highly respected UCLA Center for Human Nutrition led by Dr. David Heber is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA and founder of the Center for Human Nutrition.
Establishing and supporting this laboratory is part of the Herbalife company's multidirectional strategy to revolutionize the food industry. Not only is Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular Nutrition Lab, but Herbalife is committed to having the Scientific and Advisory Committee nationalize and internationalize renowned experts who have planned and performed many studies to establish the scientific base for new upcoming premium products.
